Religion vs. Relationship
Is your faith in Jesus Christ freeing to your soul? Or, does it feel more like a list or rules to follow, or a “to do” list to check off? Too often, well-meaning Christians fall into the trap of making their faith into a religion of “dos and don’ts.” Many of us grew up in Christian households where there was a list of rules to keep, in order to prove you were a “good Christian.” Don’t ride your bike on Sunday. Don’t go to the store on Sunday. Do go to church. Do read your Bible. Do take a nap on Sunday. :)
Rules aren’t bad. We need rules in order to have a civil society. Without rules and boundaries, we’d fall victim to our own hedonistic desires and anarchy would rule our cities. Thankfully, Christians do have rules. But they’re not what you think. We live by the rule of love and life in the Spirit. Our rule is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Our rule is to keep in step with the Spirit so we will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
The Apostle Paul is adamant about the freedom we have in Jesus Christ. Jesus has saved us from slavery to sin, Satan, death, and law. Religion is spelled “DO”; it’s all about what you have to do. Christianity is spelled “DONE”; it’s all about what Jesus has already done for us on the cross. Christian faith is about a life-giving relationship with God through Jesus Christ. It is not a “religion” of rules, regulations, and rituals. Those things do not produce life. Jesus alone produces life.
Please join your friends at Grace Church this Sunday as we continue and conclude our study of the Book of Galatians. Paul summarizes and emphasizes the main concepts of his teachings throughout the letter in Galatians 6:11-18. Worship begins at 10:00 AM. The message will inspire you. Holy Communion will be celebrated. Our praise band will return to help lead worship. A Children’s Church is provided. Refreshments will follow the service. The Spirit will be moving. All are welcome!
